AMC Theaters is charging extra and dividing the theater with 'Premium seats'

The largest theater chain in the US, 'AMC Theaters' is charging more money for prime seating

So long to the days when seating was 'first come, first served'. AMC recently released a new pricing plan in which making where you sit and how much you pay, will determine how much your night at the movie theater will cost. To be more specific, the location of your seats.

AMC's new pricing plan, “Sightline,” is already in place at some locations and by the end of the year, it is expected to be the norm across the country for all AMC theater movie screenings after 4 p.m.

Seats in the middle of the theater can cost a dollar or two more than seats in the front row and vice versa. So much for getting to the movie early to find a good seat, now seating will be more so like buying a ticket to a sporting event or concert where if you buy your ticket ahead you know exactly what row and seat you should be looking for when you enter.

While some may not care too much about the price differential or be affected much when it comes to viewers' seating preferences, many have mixed feelings toward the new pricing of seating accommodations. Even some actors, like Elijah Wood, have expressed feelings of indifference when it comes to AMC's latest change.

AMC CEO Adam Aron stated that this move could be motivated by inflation but would also allow some of the theater seats to become a value. Actually raising the price of desirable seats and cutting the cost of the latter. "Variable pricing" as he stated means there is an option you have for your seating pleasure but it may be at a cost that someone a few rows below or higher may have a different ticket price. AMC is looking to up the ante in selectively priced seating with hopes that movie-goers will continue to file in for big box office films while those looking to catch the next feature film will have a few decisions to make when it comes to their pockets and viewing experience. Only time will tell if this pays off AMC getting us back in theaters or having would-be movie-goers turn to more streaming options to cut the rising costs of theater entertainment.
