After a large amount of lawsuits started to pile up claiming Facebook violated its users' privacy and data, the social media giant is now forking over $725 million to settle. Facebook users may be eligible for compensation if they used the platform between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022.

Facebook allegedly misused user data and shared it with third parties such as app developers, affiliated businesses, advertisers, and brokers of data. Facebook did this without user consent and failed to monitor exactly how this data was being used and how the data was utilized and apprehended. Now Facebook's parent company, Meta, must pay to settle the class action lawsuit submitted from the Cambridge Analytics.
This isn't the first time that Facebook has been in the limelight regarding something similar regarding un-authorized use of user privacy and data. The settlement came in 2020 from a class-action lawsuit that stated Facebook’s facial recognition tool violated Illinois’s biometric privacy law. Roughly 1.4 million users in Illinois filed valid claims with each receiving $397. The company was found to be storing and collecting biometric data while failing to do enough to protect user data from third parties.
Eligibility and how you can be compensated.
First you need to be among the 87 million estimated current and former Facebook users who were active on Facebook between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022. You do not have to receive a notice about the class action as long as Facebook has your contact information. Second, file a claim before the until the August 25th deadline. If you want the right to sue Facebook on your own, you must opt out of the settlement by July 25. There is more information on the settlement and class action suit in general here on this link Facebook User Privacy Settlement.....Just by having an active account during the dates in question makes you part of the settlement.
