Are you in 'Goblin Mode'? 2022's Oxford WOTY

ree

Oxford University Press (OUP) are the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary have recently released the public choice 2022 Oxford word of the year. Can you guess what it is? A slang term that refers to a type of behavior described as unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations. 'Goblin mode' is the slang term referring to what some view as "lockdown traits" which have become more prevalent during the last few years of covid lockdowns, restrictions, and behaviors.

For the first time ever, The OUP (Oxford) word of the year was chosen by the public. A group of lexicographers at OUP gave voters a choice of 3 words/terms. Goblin Mode. Metaverse. And the hashtag #IStandWith. "Goblin mode" racked up 318,956 votes in total. 93% of the total votes. "Metaverse" came in second with the hashtag #IStandWith rounding out third.

The term "Goblin Mode" was first supposedly first used in 2009 and has now gained more traction on social media and other circles. With many still reeling from the effects of covid lockdowns, changes in workplace environments, and many of the younger population just getting tired of the social norms, "Goblin Mode" can define all of us in some way. The stressors of daily life, normal life, your "now", may be just lounging around in the day; doing what you want to do. Society has embraced its current culture of doing what you want to do, when you want to do it, how you want to do it without really caring too much about what society or anyone else things. Is this the new normal and are you in "Goblin Mode"? The voters have sounded, and 2022's OUP WOTY is fitting and looks to be fitting here in our society today and in our tomorrows.
