Biden's Student loan forgiveness program ruled unconstitutional; What you need to know

ree

President Joe Biden previously announced that student loan relief would come to many Americans by way of his student loan forgiveness plan. Since his announcement some state governors and opposers have voiced concern over the plan, federal appeals court temporarily blocked, and now U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman has blocked and ruled the student loan debt relief program unconstitutional.

Biden's student debt relief plan was to cancel out $20,000 for those who received Pell grants for low-income students and $10,000 for students who did not get Pell grants in college. Unfortunately, individuals who make more than $125,000 are not eligible for the one-time relief. 16 million borrowers have already applied and been approved for the program with no more applications being accepted at this time.

State governors and opposers of the programs argued that the student debt program is unfair to those who previously already paid off their student loans. Other expressed concern the forgiveness plan could encourage higher education institutions to drive up their costs worsening inflation. U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman from Texas ruled that student loan debt was unconstitutional and must be vacated in a lawsuit on behalf of two borrowers who did not qualify for student debt cancellation with Bidens' program. The Justice dept can appeal the decision and intents to do so but until further changes we don't expect student loan forgiveness for the millions approved anytime soon.
