Phil Harrison, Vice President and GM of Stadia, sent out a message on Sept 29, 2022 laying out the framework for Google's consumer gaming service Stadia to shut down and close out on Jan 18, 2023. Google's cloud streaming technology made a platform for Stadia to arise as a streaming service but didn't quite get enough traction in terms of user base leading to the decision to move forward from the service.
With the cloud gaming service unfortunately set to close, the company is showing how grateful they are to the dedicated players by taking care of them on the front end and back. Stadia is refunding all hardware purchases made through the Google store as well as all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. Players will also continue to have access to games in library and play sessions until the 18th of January next year. Expect majority of purchase refunds to be processed around that time.
As for what remains from what Stadia is leaving, the technology platform that powered Stadia still has plenty of use. The passion that came with Stadia stays within the company, and so does the cloud streaming technology. YouTube, Google Play, Google Play games all have aspects that should benefit from the team members and staff carrying the work forward in the company. Google invested across multiple aspects of the gaming industry and continues to look forward to furthering those opportunities in the future.
